The Steeple Times selects three of the best items on offer in the online auction of items formerly owned by Margaret Thatcher
Few know that Margaret Thatcher’s final resting place is in the grounds of the Royal Hospital and it is sad to note that flowers are placed there irregularly. Now, though, fans of this iconic powerhouse have an opportunity to buy items once owned by her in an online auction and here The Steeple Times chooses three of the best.
Lot 201: Mrs Thatcher’s Parliamentary Secretary’s Dispatch Box – Estimate: £1,500 to £2,500
Made by Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, this black canvas simulated leather travel dispatch box was used by Margaret Thatcher between 1961 and 1964. It is gilt embossed and features the cypher of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II above the words: “Parliamentary Secretary Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance”.
Lot 243: A sapphire blue wool crepe suit by Acquascutum – Estimate: £1,200 to £1,800
Lot 428: Handbag by Raflo – Estimate: £ 1,000 to £1,500
Used by Lady Thatcher on her last visit to 10 Downing Street in 2010, this early 21st century handbag should be in the V&A. Despite their having previously rejected the opportunity to purchase items relating to Britain’s greatest Prime Minister, they really ought to ensure this item is saved for the nation.
The auction – which is being conducted by Christie’s – concludes on 16th December 2015.
