Stopping a socialite

Section:

Socialite Waris Ahluwalia prevented from boarding a flight because he was wearing a turban

On Monday, The Grand Budapest Hotel star and frequent attendee of the ASmallWorld social network’s social events was barred from boarding an Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to New York because he refused to remove his turban.

Stopping a socialite – Waris Ahluwalia barred from flying because of his turban
Waris Ahluwalia used social media to highlight Aeromexico’s policy towards turban wearing passengers

In response to being told he would have to fly with a different airline, the Sikh-American star and socialite took to Instagram and wrote: “Dear NYC fashion week, I may be a little late as @aeromexico won’t let me fly with a turban. Don’t start the show without me”. He then added: “Update. 13 hours later. Still in Mexcio City. No traveler should be subjected to what I was today. All we’re asking for from @aeromexico is an apology and education/training of the staff”.

Whilst 7,628 people liked Mr Ahluwalia’s second post, one Instagrammer, @konry77, commented:

“He plays roles in movies (where everybody in the world can see him) with no turban but he cannot remove it for few seconds to follow international laws regarding the security! It looks suspicious. He does not wear it for movie money but he pretends to wear it to get a bit of popularity… He can stay in Mexico for long [sic]”.

Ahluwalia subsequently appeared on CNN with Christiane Amanpour to discuss the matter and announced he’d received an apology from Aeromexico. In a statement, the airline remarked:

“Aeromexico recognizes and is proud of the diversity of its passengers. We apologize to Mr. Waris Ahluwalia for the bad experience he went through with one of our security personnel”.

The actor will now fly to New York today, Wednesday.

    1. He’s a silly sausage but he is right on this point. I’m not a fan of his acting and all he’s really known for is hanging around with socialites and fashionistas but well done to him for standing up for humanity.

    2. Self-publicity seeker………… The policy inflicted was unfair but I digress, all he wanted was to get on the telly with Christiane Amanpour. #Desperate #Selfpublicist #Boring

    3. Good point Peter, they are brave fighters and proved their worth many times fighting for Britain. Does anyone remember when those riots were happening in town a few years back and the Sikhs stood guard outside their places of worship with drawn swords ? I loved that so much because the PC Police did not dare to touch them because the Sikhs claimed that they were part of their ceremonial dress! I was desperately hoping that they would behead a few rioters.

    4. Charles, it’s interesting how one rarely meets an unlikeable Sikh. They seem to meld well into society, whilst simultaneously keeping their traditions: a lesson Muslims, who never stop whining, could learn from Sikhs.
I wonder who the imperious looking Sikh was one used to see driving around London in his Bentley.
      A great sight

    5. A very good point now that you mention it, they do integrate with ease and grace. I recall that chap in the Bentley, he had the air of the Raj about him, one could almost imagine him driving a 30′ Bentley with running boards fitted out with a rack carrying a pair of double rifles and shikari standing on it scanning the horizon ahead for tigers!

    6. Publicity driven perhaps but he’s succeeded in making the point (to those who needed it made most) that Sikhs are unconnected to Muslims and for that alone boy done good!
