Taming the Dragon

Unusual Chinese style house that once played host to dissidents in Winchester offered for sale

Last offered for sale in 2001 for £895,000 (the equivalent of £1.3 million or $1.6 million or €1.5 million or درهم‎‎6 million today), The Pagoda House in Winchester is a truly remarkable building. Built in the Chinese style for five times Mayor of Southampton Richard Andrews in 1848, the house is again for sale but this time for the much increased price of £4.5 million ($5.6 million, €5.2 million or درهم‎‎20.6 million).

Offering 5,012 square foot of accommodation over four floors, The Pagoda House is described as “extraordinary” and “flamboyant”. It is considered “a tour de force and whilst out of step with the architectural movement or fashion at the time, it was believed to be in keeping with Andrews’ extravagant nature”. He entertained the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi and a leading Polish dissident, Count Czariski, there.

Subsequently divided into flats and now without many of the original dragon sculptures that adorned it, the Grade II listed house now includes 5 reception rooms, 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an orangery. It stands on a plot of 0.67 acres and is being marketed by Savills.

  1. It’s almost at the top of a very steep hill so, if you want to pop into the centre of town for a bit of shopping, have a meal or drink, it’s fine on the way down, but you’d need a taxi back (ever tried to park in Winchester?)
