Matthew Steeples suggests the BBC’s decision not to appeal the Cliff Richard privacy ruling is very worrying for press freedom
News that the BBC have decided not to challenge the Cliff Richard privacy ruling is not surprising but it also sets a worrying precedent.
In a statement, aside from apologising yet again to the plainly strange Christian crooner, the Corporation thankfully, however, announced they would be taking its case to a higher level and stated:
“The BBC is writing today to ask the Government to consider a review of the law in this important area to protect the right to properly and fairly report criminal investigations, and to name the person under investigation.”
“There is a fundamental principle of press freedom at stake here and one upon which we believe Parliament, as our lawmakers, should decide.”
They are quite right and given this ruling is tantamount to new legislation, this ultimately will go down in history as taking Britain down a very dangerous road.

I am more interested in what went on at the Elm Guest House in Barnes Common. It is well worth Googling the list of named attendees. If that list is ever proven to be truthful a lot of questions still need to be answered.

The BBC deserve to be made to pay MILLIONS to Sir Cliff. He did nothing wrong and he entertains so many of us with his wonderful songs. Unlike the modern singers he actually sings about lovely things and makes us all happy. When he’s at Wimbledon it is so special.
This outcome was inevitable but I think it was wrong. Why is it that women like Gloria Hunniford and Cilla Black hung around with this man and people like Max Clifford and Rolf Harris? The whole crowd had something very unsavoury about it.
Yes there are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the notorious Elm St Guest house. Anybody can easily Google this and clearly see The Bachelor boys name on there, alias Kitty. I would like to know why he was never questioned over any of this. Having said all that, I agree, there is a fundamental principal of press freedom at stake here. But more importantly how do undesirables in powerful positions manage to stifle proper Investigation into the whole thing?
