Matthew Steeples suggests that the Conservatives should stop attacking one another and focus on getting out of the coalition
The Conservative Party needs to get its house in order instead of allowing in-fighting to dominate the headlines. The priority for David Cameron has to be ending their coalition with the wishy-washy Liberals, beating Labour and winning an overall majority.
Instead, the Tories currently find themselves in a dispute over the de-selection of the “silly little girl” Anne McIntosh in Thirsk and Malton and a fight over Tim Yeo being “snubbed by three top Conservatives” in Suffolk South. The Conservatives need to get a grip. Instead of giving UKIP an open goal, they need to ditch their petty squabbling and focus on getting Britain back on track.

This is part of getting a party which is more electable. Getting rid of the likes of Anne McIntosh makes the party more electable as it is more able to offer the basic Conservative principals of letting people be free to do in their own lives as they please as long as it doesn’t adversely affect others in their similar right. I’d vote for that – why wouldn’t you?
I understand your point regarding making the party more electable and her and Yeo are not exactly fine characters. However, allowing in-fighting to dominate the media is the issue in my view. The Conservatives will not win until they focus on what is really important and that is the economy.
The media, Matthew are doing what they should be doing. They are pointing out that the Conservative Party is ideologically riven. It’s a little like the Anglican Church:no one is sure what it stands for.
Ukip has become the ‘riot vote’ for middle classes who would traditionally vote Con….and the Labour rump who feel abandoned on issues like immigration.
Cameron can’t coalesce people and until the Conservatives have such a leader they will only be able to govern in alliance.
The Party needs to ditch Cameron and replace him with someone ideologically more congenial to Farage.
It should be a party that is steaming back into power and sadly it isn’t. The country needs leadership.
Well they won’t get it from Cameron. In fact, the team that surrounds him is of greater quality and effectiveness.
I went to a private dinner at which James Wharton was extolling the virtues of his Cameron backed Referendum Bill.
I had to point out that the chances of him getting through the Lords were nil so why give the opposition a stick to beat you with….
He was unhappy at being taken to task
It certainly can be considered to be double trouble. Cameron has a better chance of getting a hard copy of Xaviera Hollander’s best-selling memoir The Happy Hooker: “My Own Story” through the House of Lords than a seedy Referendum Bill. Democracy can sometimes be such a pain in the ass.
