Alexandra Naylor reports on this year’s strawberries and Pimm’s fuelled Wimbledon Championships
It’s Wimbledon again – the oldest and most prestigious tennis championship in the world. The unique combination of a British defending champion and beautiful blue skies has made this year’s Wimbledon an even more popular event than usual.
Having been brought up and lived in Wimbledon most of my life, I have enjoyed each unfolding year from my days as a school girl simply walking into Centre Court with ease to watch the greats –Vilas, Nastase, Connors, Borg and McEnroe. Nowadays I don’t venture to the courts which is just as well as tickets cost a small fortune unless you want to the join the overnight queues. That’s great fun but my camping days outside the courts are well and truly over.
Around Wimbledon Village one sees most of the top players – many of whom rent or own houses in SW19 – popping into the local shops and coffee houses to enjoy this lovely part of London. My sweet tooth dragged me into Sugarpova on the High Street, the new business launched by Maria Sharapova, which sells delicious sweets and freshly made vegetable and fruit juices. Andy Murray has already managed to find time to pop into my friend’s restaurant, Thai Tho, to chomp on some noodles before his second match also.
Here’s hoping for continued blue skies above SW19 as memories of Cliff Richard singing in the rain seem very distant now. From him, please, we don’t need a word.

A lovely description of wimbledon fortnight and memories it evokes.
An exhausting two weeks for all our staff but as you can see from this article a fantastic tournament with the eyes of the sporting world on SW19. Here’s to next year but first we all need a Thai Break!
