Tony Blair disputes estimates of his wealth and claims that he just wants to make a difference
Last week, our former Prime Minister Tony Blair declared: “I’ve not changed. It’s not about making money. It’s about making a difference”. Curiously, for a man with so little interest in cash, he then went on to spend £50,000 on a lavish surprise party for his wife’s 60th birthday on Friday night.
In a speech to mark the 20th anniversary of his being elected leader of the Labour party, Blair stated:
“Reports of my wealth have been greatly exaggerated… For the record, I read that I’m supposed to be worth £100 million. Cherie’s asking me where it is… I’m not worth that. A half of that. A third of that. A quarter of that. A fifth of that. I could go on”.
Given Blair divides his time in the UK between an £8 million Grade I listed country house in Buckinghamshire and an £8.8 million Georgian townhouse in London’s Connaught Square and owns a property portfolio that totals some £25 million, he plainly could do with some lessons in maths. Adding a vast annual income to this stash, undoubtedly, takes the fortune of Blair and his wife to somewhere conservatively north of £40 million.
Unlike many others, we do not begrudge the Blair family their success and wealth. They would do well, however, not to talk about it.
