ASmallWorld announces plans to charge members $100 per year
On the same day that Patrick Liotard-Vogt, the chairman of the social network ASmallWorld, is hosting a cocktail party for his members at The Gin Room in Madrid, the Swiss title Bilanz announced plans by the site’s management to charge members $100 per year to use it.
The article states there are currently 800,000 members. To paraphrase The Sun’s quote on Neil Kinnock: “Will the last person to leave [ASmallWorld] please turn out the lights”.

100USD is fair enough as far as I’m concerned. Yes, even if just for a somewhat ‘closed’ network of honest, intelligent, successful/getting-there entrepreneural, and damn-good-live-in-the-moment-fun-loving individuals from around the world:)
They asked about our willingness to pay in a survey they sent out and have no doubt set a fee that makes sense with the ‘yes/no/how-much’ responses they received. And, why shouldn’t the founders and owners make some money? Heck, they deserve a chance to try:)

P.S Yoel, that is the problem. People endlessly trying to sell stuff like ‘quality diamond tennis bracelets’.
aSW was a club. Can you imagine someone selling jewellery in a gentleman’s club?
At least I just leave my books in the library on a table and people decide to pick them up or place their martini glass on them.
Travel advice was the core of aSW. But if people are paying to give advice, will they bother anymore? There was something about the atmosphere of giving without money being involved.

Then again, maybe it’s not so much about the item but the hunters/people and the ‘trying’… That said, many an exclusive item has been sold, bought, and important deals closed in the best of clubs – amongst true owners, worthwhile direct contacts and good people. And, yes, advice, introductions and ideas for genuinely free still have their place too for sure.
What a stupid website ASW is. I got bored of it years ago.
