The Queen is no doubt deservedly raising a glass tonight after her first ever Gold Cup win at Royal Ascot.

Asked what it meant to train a Gold Cup winner for the Queen, Estimate’s trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, replied:

“We know how much she loves this game… I really felt it was a tough task, I wasn’t confident at all with her [Estimate] taking on the boys. It’s a great honour to win for Her Majesty the Queen… It’s a special thrill for the Queen. She said it gave her great pleasure and she thanked everyone involved.”

Of the victory, the Queen’s grandson, Peter Phillips, added:

“It’s amazing, this [is] her passion and her life and she’s here every year and she strives to have winners. To win the big one at Royal Ascot means so much to her. Everyone is just thrilled, it’s very close to her heart and today is very special”.

Seeing off a challenge from Simenon in the final furlong, Estimate, ridden by Ryan Moore, made history by becoming the first horse owned by a reigning monarch to win the 207-year old race. We most definitely say cheers to that.

  1. What was astonishing was the behaviour of “Lord” John Warren, the Queen’s Stud Manager.
He behaved like some footballer and looked at utter fool with his over familiarity and lack of dignity.
I know plenty of East Enders and they would have shown much more decorum than this chap.
He should remember the old expression about ‘horses that can’t take oats’.
Evidently, he has become ever so grand and hoity-toity….and likes to hide the fact he is a greengrocer’s son from the East End. What with the Middleton clan the Queen must be wondering what’s going on.
