As Matthew Steeples announces that he has submitted an application to stand for ChangeUK – The Independent Group, he argues that we must all work for a better Britain
Britain is broken. That’s a fact and with a stubborn and frankly disastrous Prime Minister what can we do?
Having repeatedly argued the case against Brexit in this title and been on such things as the People’s Vote March, I have never been anything but a publicly ‘out’ remainer. For this I have been criticised in some quarters and targeted by such people as Viscount St David’s and the vile Traditional Britain Group even.
To my mind, as a former activist and someone who worked on the leadership campaigns of William Hague in the 1990s and Kenneth Clark in the 2000s, it was not I who left the Conservative Party but they who left me. I, like so many others, found myself party-less and now, today, I confirm that I have applied to be a candidate in the European Elections for ChangeUK – The Independent Group.
Whilst improbable that I will even be selected, I want to state that I now feel we must all do what we can to stop Brexit plunging Britain into an era of deeper doom. I urge all readers to heed the words of Edmund Burke: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” and to put their heads above the parapets.

You should be sent to the asylum
You need locking up
With Mr Steeples passion and dedication there could be few others more fitted for the independent party
I have to say, Steven Berkoff’s comment is a damned sight calmer and more reasoned than Jackie’s “Section him!” response.
I applaud you for wanting to step up to the plate, Matthew. But to honest, I am baffled as to why you would want to stand on behalf of TIG/Change UK.
The problem with them is that nobody knows what they stand for – i.e. what their exact policies are. Their website provides nothing concrete – just a load of wishy-washy ramblings about how they’re fed up with current politics, want to defend Britain’s security, and make the country prosperous.
Nobody has a clue as to how precisely they intend to go about it. And who funds them, btw?
In terms of their current membership, I actually find the former Tories more palatable than the former Labour MPs (which is really saying something). I haven’t come across anyone with a positive thing to say about Chuka Umunna – the man who recently did a 180-degree turn and urged Remain campaigners to abandon calls for a second referendum or risk being seen as a metropolitan elite “who think they know best”
I agree that the established parties – Labour, Tories, & Lib Dems are all useless. But TIG, for me, is not the answer.
I remember when Steeples was actually a good journalist. Now hoes a remainiac fanatic only complaining about street scooters and patriots
