Matthew Steeples asks: “Is it right that institutions such as the BBC and the V&A laud Boy George in spite of his many convictions?”
Boy George is everywhere: Be it on the BBC’s The Voice or giving a talk at the V&A in South Kensington, this vain pop star has been accepted back into ‘The Club’ as if he’s never done a single thing wrong.
A convicted criminal, found guilty of offences ranging from falsely reporting a burglary in 2006 to assault and false imprisonment in 2008, Boy George once admitted: “People have this idea of Boy George now, particularly the media: that I’m tragic, f**ked up. I mean, I am all those things” but such comments have now been swept under the carpet.
The BBC, a publicly funded institution that claims to have learnt from their ‘mistakes’ with Jimmy Savile and others, have again got it very wrong in the choice of this Eltham born individual as their new court favourite. Here, instead of some innocent delight, is, in fact, a man who once chained a male escort to a wall fixture and “subjected him to violence” and here is a man who has been arrested for heroin possession. This individual is no role model and it is jolly well time that ‘Auntie’ took him back off air.

Someone should tell him to rod off back to America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a talented artist and he provides entertainment. His sexual activities are his own matter and though he should not have chained up the prostitute, the man went to him willingly and I think he knew what he was getting into. Boy George shouldn’t have been convicted for that and I think you are f**king stupid to have written this attack on such a brilliant genius. Rolf Harris is innocent too and you’ve got to stop attacking him also.
A genius? Still, I suppose a sad creature like you who acts as a propaganda machine for perverts would take this line
You clown, Rod. He is British. Why don’t you rod off back to Sunshine North
I agree with MS. The man is revolting and this is yet another example of a famous British institution trying to be edgy…..so embarrassing!
Let he amongst that is amongst us cast the first stone; but there are limits
Without sin
I agree with Peter and well done to Matthew for highlighting the point that this scumbag should not be supported by the BBC. When people like that are presented as role models something is seriously wrong.
‘The Club’ just reward their own always. That is largely my point and the victim of Boy George has rightly complained and unsurprisingly been ignored.
Any chance there might be some genuine redemption in all this?
In fairness to Boy George, there are many peers in the House of Lords and other politicians that battle the same paraphilias, the BBC view this as normal behaviour.
Former cocaine and heroin addict George was jailed in 2009 for 15 months after being found guilty of assault and false imprisonment but was given early release after four months for good behaviour.
Now, the once-shamed singer is back on top after landing a lucrative gig replacing Sir Tom Jones as one of the four judges on the BBC talent show The Voice – with a rumoured salary of £300,000.
How the hell can this pervert mentor up and coming young talent, what a bloody joke, he has no bloody talent anyway. I also wonder how Sir Tom feels, being replaced by this scumbag, the BBC should take a long hard look at it’s self.
As for you, Rolf is innocent, you seriously need to seek some help, how the hell you can think for one second he is innocent is beyond me, you probably think the same about Savile as well.
You are obviously a Pedo along with them, and should be banned from this forum.
Harris and Savile are as innocent as Jenner.
The view from America when Boy George first appeared was an amused, “How English!” However, after all the creepy and disgusting revelations about him, we, Yanks, find it very UN-English for a respected institution like the BBC, as we view it, to take him from obscurity, dust him off, and re-present him. It is bewildering.
Why is he doing a runner from the US?!
Is he on the run.
Isn’t the club full of kiddy fiddlers
Have people actually forgotten what Boy George was sent to prison for?
The details in the Guardian report make for horrifying reading. http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2009/jan/16/boy-george-sentenced-handcuffing-male-escort
Basically, he accused the escort of hacking into his computer, and then he and another man beat the escort, handcuffed him to a wall, produced a box of sex toys and told him he was “going to get what he deserved”. The man only managed to escape by breaking free of the wall restraint.
Christ! There are shades of Fred West-like sexual torture there!
How can the BBC overlook or even accept behaviour like that? Anyone who is capable of such acts is an extremely dangerous individual. I have also been wary of the man ever since I noticed that he follows the convicted paedophile Jonathan King on Twitter (as did Stephen Fry before he deleted his account).
While there is no evidence of either Fry or Boy George ever abusing minors, I think you can judge what kind of people they are by associating with such a person.
You make some very, very valid points. I can accept Stephen Fry may have followed Jonathan King in error so will overlook that but Boy George is a proven abusive individual who has been jailed for his crimes. The BBC should be ashamed of itself and its masters’ heads should roll for keeping this beast on air.
Thanks, Matthew – but sadly, I do not think Stephen Fry followed Jonathan King “in error”. If you look at this article, King mentions having a “raucous lunch” with Fry at La Gavroche http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/jonathan-king-my-books-an-online-hit-millions-click-on-my-videos-how-about-lifting-the-media-ban-on-6268884.html
I have also come across mention on King’s blog of him, Paul Gambaccini (aka “I knew all along about Jimmy Savile”), and Gambaccini’s partner watching Stephen Fry in a play – and then, afterwards, all of them going to dinner together. The fact that Fry also followed King on Twitter basically confirmed their friendship. It was what made me unfollow Fry on Twitter. As I say, there is no evidence of Fry abusing minors himself, but anyone who is friends with that disgusting person King should take a good look at themselves in the mirror.
Well said Ella, it’s about time the BBC woke up to it’s self.
After it’s past history, you would think it would tread softly.
Michael Barrymore the death in the swimming pool party, the BBC and the Liberal elite want to normalise this kind of behavior, they tried to cover up for Savile to the very end.
Karma karma karma comedian
Let it be.
