Out networked

Section:

A club for people with more money than sense

Social networks were all the rage in the early 2000s and the social network for so-called “high net worths” was ASmallWorld. Though it prospered in its early days, it’s since floundered and I can’t personally say I know a single person who remains a member. Now, someone else is trying to seize the mantle and in founding something called the Netropolitan Club, an orchestra conductor named James Touchi-Peters has proven that this phenomena is still something that some will seek to exploit.

James Touchi-Peters founded the Netropolitan Club because he believes “there is a need and an audience for this service”

Touchi-Peters claims he came up with the idea because he “had trouble finding people to whom he could relate on other social sites” and charges £5,520 ($9,000) as a joining fee and then a further £1,840 ($3,000) annual fee for membership. The Netropolitan Club’s homepage boldly goes as far as to describe itself as “the world’s most exclusive online community” and an “online country club for people with more money than time”.

Of the site – which launched Tuesday – Touchi-Peters’ spokesperson Michelle Lawless of Media Minefield told the Los Angeles Times:

“James and others have mentioned feeling judged for talking about certain topics on other social media outlets. Like they were bragging and met with a little ill will… Netropolitan is designed to be the place to talk about your last European vacation or new car without the backlash”.

I’m sure they wouldn’t have me anyway, but I, for one, won’t be rushing to join.

    1. Asmallworld was great when it began but nobody uses it anymore. It could have been bigger than Facebook and it ended up a flop. I was surprised to hear anyone would still consider starting something similar. This is a very stupid idea.
