A château to go

An opportunity to buy a castle with a catch

Most of think nothing of ordering a pizza or burger “to go” but on the 12th December, those with a slightly larger budget and imagination will have the opportunity to “take out” something quite different: An entire French château.

Château Estoua

For auction that day at the 51 Gallery in Brussels, Belgium is the Château Estoua, an entire neo-classical castle that was built at the end of the 19th century. The building was designed by René Sergent, who worked on both The Savoy and Claridge’s, and its architecture is described as being “of Louis XVI style”. The château was originally owned by the Dubarry de la Salle family but surprisingly was never inhabited.

The catch? Château Estoua was dismantled in its entirety some years ago and put into storage in Langon, Giornde, France. Now consisting of 700 cubic metres of stones, plans and specialists are available to whoever makes the winning bid. When rebuilt in its new location, the château will measure 135 foot long by 50 foot deep and 46 foot high.

    1. What a strange thing to buy. It should be restored to its original setting. Those who rape and pillage and steal such houses and take them elsewhere are cultural vandals.

    2. A similar lot is ( a dismantled Palladian chapel from Swindon ) is a field off the road between Tetbury and Malmesbury

Minto House – latterly Craigmount School for young ladies in Perthshire, was bought in its entirety, then shipped to Japan, where it is a club house for a Golf club
