Citizen of the Manor

Manor house owned by one of the McAlpine family comes to the market

The McAlpine family have construction in their blood. They’ve built everything from The Dorchester to the Millennium Dome and one of the current generation, Cullum McAlpine, is no different. His Cotswolds country house, Cold Ashton Manor, is currently for sale for £4 million and its architectural features are stunning.

Cullum McAlpine came to attention when he appeared before a House of Commons select committee regarding an alleged “blacklist scandal” in January 2013 and after he was subsequently targeted by campaigners who wished to perform a citizen’s arrest on him in February 2014. The Blacklist Support Group were not successful in their attempt.

Grade I listed Cold Ashton Manor was built between 1597 and 1601 by the widow of the Mayor of Bristol, Elizabeth Pepwell. It has best been surmised by Christopher Ashton for Country Life who described it as “a hill top house, grey gables pricking the sky; a perfectly integrated symmetrical composition”. Features include an ornate 17th century gateway, ovolo mullions, bolection moulding, richly carved doors and screens, ornate architraving, decorative plaster frieze and arched stone fireplaces.

Accommodation in the U-plan shaped main house totals 8,993 square foot in size and includes 4 reception rooms, 7 bedrooms and a 2-bedroom staff flat. In addition there is 3 bedroomed farmhouse and a number of outbuildings. The property stands in 23.5 acres of formal gardens and paddocks.

Cold Ashton Manor is for sale through Knight Frank’s Bath office.
