Moulton’s Mini

The late, great Alex Moulton’s car collection goes to auction

The eccentric engineer Dr Alexander Moulton CBE (1920 – 2012) is best known for his innovative bicycles and the work he did with Sir Alexander Issigonis on the Austin Mini. A number of Dr Moulton’s personal vehicles will be auctioned by Bonhams on 9th December 2013 in Oxford.

The most important car in the collection is Moulton’s 1966 Morris Mini Cooper ‘S’. Marketed with an estimate of £18,000 to £22,000, the vehicle is described as his “personal favourite” and cost £784 5s 10d as new. Extensively modified first by Downton Engineering and then Colour Developments, the front passenger seat was replaced with a Rolls-Royce Shadow style passenger seat at the nearside rear to “enable Moulton to be driven in style”. Complete with a full history, the car was also fitted with a Jack Knight five-speed gearbox in 1994 and its engine was modified by Longman in 2002.

Other vehicles belonging to Dr Moulton that will be sold number his 1997 Bentley Brooklands (£7,000 – £9,000), a 1964 Morris Mini Moke (£2,500 – £3,500), a 2000 Rover Mini 1.3i (£3,000 – £5,000) and a 1981 Austin Mini Metro 1.3S (£1,000 – £1,500).

The Duke of Edinburgh once told Dr Alexander Moulton “that he might end up under a glass case himself”. Now, at very reasonable guide prices, fans of this great man can acquire a little bit of motoring history. Those on a lower budget could also consider buying a Moulton Bicycle.
