Perfectly British

An opportunity to create your own version of Downton Abbey in the Cotswolds

For a mere £27 million you can currently purchase a 6-bedroomed mews house in Reeves Mews in Mayfair. Alternatively, a buyer with the same sum to hand could splash out on something a little grander, a 774.32 acre Cotswold estate complete with a mansion, two entrance lodges and eleven cottages.

The home of a “private American gentleman” until his death, the Abbotswood Estate centres around the 22,293 square foot Grade II listed Abbotswood House which was built in 1862. Extended and altered for “a wealthy businessman and accomplished amateur gardener” named Mark Fenwick by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1902, this vast property is 24 times the size of a typical British new build house and includes 10 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.

As well as having “one of the best known gardens in Gloucestershire”, Abbotswood comes with parkland, pasture, woodland and arable land. Registered organic, the estate benefits from fishing on the river Dikler and potential for pheasant and partridge shooting.

Around £50,000 per annum in income is derived from letting the additional houses that come as part of the deal and there is also planning permission for a further four dwellings.

The most expensive country house for sale in the UK currently, Abbotswood described as being ideal for “someone who wanted to entertain but also someone who was looking for privacy”. For sale through Laws & Fiennes and Knight Frank, Country Life recently went as far to call the property “the perfect country house for a British buyer”.

    1. What an ugly house. Great land but the Victorian monstrosity has to go. Demolish it and build something better.
