Reducing an island

Buy a private island in Scotland’s Summer Isles for a knockdown price

The Scottish independence campaign has been in the main funded by EuroMillions winners Chris and Colin Weir. If their desire doesn’t come to fruition, however, there’s another option for them: They could buy themselves a private island.

One currently available is Tanera Mòr, the largest and only inhabited island of the Summer Isles archipelago. For sale through CKD Galbraith and extending to around 800 acres, this island comes complete with nine houses and its own private post office issuing Summer Isles stamps.

Tanera Mòr is situated 1.5 miles off the north-west coast of Scotland and 83 miles from Inverness. It is described as being “easily accessible” and is 1.2 miles wide and 1.6 miles long. Its highest point is Meall Mòr (124 metres) and as there are no deer or rabbits, the 164,000 native trees planted by the current owners, Richard and Lizzie Williams, have prospered.

At its peak in the 1800s, Tanera Mòr was home to as many as 120 people but with the decline of herring and the onset of the First World War, it became uninhabited in the 1930s. In 1939, Sir Fraser Darling, a naturalist, became resident and reclaimed land to agricultural production. By the 1960s, tourism had become the main business operation. Aside from holiday cottages, there is a salmon farm, a sailing school, a café and a Post Office and visitors come on a daily basis from tourist boats and cruise ships such as the Hebridean Princess.

The 1973 British horror film The Wicker Man was set on a fictional island named Summerisle but the buyer of Tanera Mòr will surely hope that they don’t end up having to make any sacrifices other than the property’s £1,950,000 million asking price (reduced from £2.5 million).
