Saab: It’s what a car should be

An auction of 78 of the last Saabs to be made

Jeremy Clarkson once commented: “Buying a Saab is like turning down Cindy Crawford for a Labrador” and in turn as consumers followed his lead, the company went bust in 2011.

The collapse of this Swedish company attracted much press attention as it was considered by many to be one of the “strangest and most unique car companies that ever engaged in mass production”. Now, with an auction of 78 of the last Saabs built by the firm, Saab lovers can cast a final die for one of these vehicles “born from jets”.

The sale, commissioned by the automobile manufacturer’s receivers, is being run online by the Swedish KVD auction house and includes 31 examples of the company’s SUV, the 9-4X, of which only 700 were ever produced.

An example car in the auction numbers a 2011 Saab 9-4X 2.8T V6 Aero. The reserve on the car has yet to be met but given that it is not road legal as it was used as a test car, it’ll be fascinating to see if it sells for more than the £7,000 current bid.

Of the lots on offer, Per Blomberg of KVD states:

“We held a similar auction at the end of last year and noticed the strong following that Saab still has around the world. The interest was enormous, both in Sweden and internationally. With the last cars now being sold we expect an equally high level of interest from Saab enthusiasts”.

KVD’s sale concludes on 3rd April so if you’re a believer in the saying: “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” and hanker after a future piece of automotive history, you might want to chip in a bid.

As the defunct brand’s marketeers once stated: “Saab: It’s what a car should be”.

  1. I love the Saab and always lusted after a friend’s Elizabethan golden yellow sports version. Now that they are no longer being manufactured, I would be asking, what about spare parts?
