Taking Aston to another level

Aston Martin to be sold in New York could fetch in excess of £10 million and become the highest priced British car ever to be hammered down at auction

Priced with a guide of £9.9 million to £11.2 million ($15 million to $17 million, €14.1 million to €16 million), a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato could set a new record if it sells in New York at RM Auctions’ Driven by Disruption sale on 10th December.

The interior

The car – which is listed as having an “English pedigree [and an] Italian soul” – is the fourteenth of just nineteen DB4GTs tailor-made by Zagato and was originally shipped to Australia for use on racing circuits by its first owner. Returned to the UK in 1993 after twenty years in static storage, the car was exhibited at the Louis Vuitton Concours at the Hurlingham and the Bagatelle Concours d’Elegance in 2002. It won its class at both and subsequently has been shown at Villa d’Este, Pebble Beach, Quail, the Neillo Concours, the Presidio of San Francisco Concours and the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours.

Described as an “engineering masterpiece and a design icon” and “one of the finest Zagatos in existence”, this Aston Martin will beat the £8.8 million ($13.4 million, €12.5 million) price paid for a 1998 McLaren F1 and become the highest priced British car to be sold at auction if it meets its lower estimate.

    1. Beautiful car. Note that the interior is all green including the leather. Green would not actually be my choice but it is a shame that modern Astons are most often ordered with dull black interiors which in fact are not traditional at all for Astons which generally had bright red leather or other colours like blue or green. Black leather was hardly ever to be found in British sports cars right up until the 1990’s when sadly a new bread of German car owners started buying them and ordering them with dull black seats. The other obsession is grey exteriors which is also a shame as this cars proves. Astons do not always have to be grey, they look so much better in blue or green but people are such sheep nowadays. The current grey/silver Aston obsession reminds me of that awful period which started in the 70’s when all Ferraris came in red with cream seats. Yuk!

        • I rather doubt it, cars need to have substantial history, usually racing history to achieve figures like that, I don’t know what circuits it’s Aussie owner used it on or if it was used in serious competition. The American auctions have not achieved the values they have predicted for the last few years either.

    2. Matthew – are you a Journalist?

Sensational Steeples – News Hound – on the trail of another tasty morsel

I VEV and 2 VEV were famous contemporary green Zagatos one or other of which had been driven by the late great Bondini ( Richard Bond )

Bondini had his admirers and detractors in equal measures but he did drive twenty six thousand racing miles in Daytonas, GT40’s and strange Porches that used the tubular chassis as oil sumps

    3. Hi Matthew, as usual just bid for it on my behalf & I’ll pay you back obviously when I next see you at La Brasserie. Will a mixture of Nectar Points, Luncheon Vouchers & Tesco Club Card be OK?
