Fascinating diagram showing how every breed of dog is connected
When we came across a diagram that delineates nearly every standard breed of dog, we knew it would be something that our animal loving readers would be fascinated to see.
The chart features 181 dog breeds ranging from spaniels and terriers to working dogs like the Alaskan malamute and livestock guardian dogs like the Anatolian shepherd dog.
Dogs and wolves emerged from a common ancestor between 11,000 and 34,000 years ago and though every breed may look different, they are all essentially the same. Dogs have a relatively simple genetic code compared to other species and changes in them, such as fur and ear shape, are controlled by a single genetic variation. Tinkering with canine biology is relatively simple and the result has as much resulted in the breeding of dogs for aesthetic qualities as creating the best hunters and protectors.
The Diagram of Dogs is available as a 24” x 18” print from the Pop Chart Lab for $29 (£17.60).
