#GetMohamedAJob

Section:

Refugee Mohamed Elbarkey could not get a job; he did not give up and took enterprising action to try to get work

Mohamed Elbarkey came to Britain as a refugee from Libya. He worked hard and got degrees from the University of Southampton and University College London yet still could not get a job in finance.

After having sent out 70 CVs without success, 22-year-old Elbarkey decided to stand outside Canary Wharf tube station with a sign pleading for work. Whilst there, he encountered Mary Engleheart – a digital manager at the International Rescue Committee and having heard his story she decided to share it with her Twitter followers.

Elbarkey’s stunt subsequently went viral and aside from being shared by the former Labour politician David Miliband, the hashtag #GetMohamedAJob attracted press attention internationally. In comments to the Evening Standard last week, Elbarkey remarked:

“I found this young man, David, he did the same stunt in Silicon Valley. He wanted a job in technology and what better place. I found that he had over 200 job offers and I thought I only need one.”

“Why don’t I try and see if my story resonates with these executives at these large financial firms and see if they wanted to take me under their wing, even offer me an internship and a job or genuinely just some advice.”

If you can help, email [email protected] and we will pass on your details to Mohamed Elbarkey. Here is an enterprising youngster who deserves to be encouraged and we urge readers to share the hashtag: #GetMohamedAJob also.

  1. I like that you mix up the good and the bad. After yesterday’s feature on the ligger David Pun, this is a good news story that we should all share.

    #GetMohamedAJob

  2. What about helping British people get jobs Steeple Times??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is ridiculous and probably #fakenews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you fell for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stupid you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Oh wow, Rodders, you’re strict. Only British people to be helped by other Brits. I guess, extrapolating your logic, that means everyone except Aboriginal and Torres Islanders should leave Australia post haste and leave employment to the indigenous population. Wonder where you’re all going to go.
But you say it’s probably FakeNews and he’s therefore presumably not really looking for a job, so that’s all right then.

  4. To most sensible people today, this would indeed look to be “fake news” because with a name such as Mohamed, he is advertising himself as a Muslim, a group that at this time in the civilised World is just not in favour, so the media is testing the waters to identify anyone who could be racist, or if their daughter had just been raped by one of these Middle Eastern “refugees” most of us would agree that the Muslims are a great threat to our societies with their public shouting for Sharia law and the street murders with vehicles or even bombs. The first thing I woud do if it is a genuine plea for help is change my name to a Western one where the chances of getting employment in the very specialised profession he claims to have qualifications in. I make no apologies for writing the obvious, although I expect some fools to call me a “racist” when Islam is not a race. How about posting copies of his Degree certificates, readable on line for potential employers to read and check. That could speed his quest and dispel any doubts about this “news”. Avery obvious action to take I would think.

    • I have seen his CV and it is perfectly genuine. I think though you are entitled to your views, your comments about how the young man should change his name are quite outrageous.

  5. Rod you are an idiot. He is British. Talented young man by the looks of it. 5 years uni? Probably got himself a PhD.
