Grade I listed Sir John Soane designed country house Tyringham Hall reduced in price by 30%
We featured Tyringham Hall, near Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire when it was last placed on the market for £18 million ($25.8 million or €22.8 million) in June 2013. It is now being offered for sale again but for a substantially lower sum.
Owned by property developer Anton Bilton and his Brooklyn born wife Lisa Barbuscia (better known as Lisa B.) since they paid £2.5 million (the equivalent of £3.7 million, $5.3 million or €4.7 million today) for it in 2001, the 36,602 square foot isn’t exactly pint-sized and comes with 25 bedrooms and 32 bathrooms. Sadly, only 59.21 acres still form part of the estate and ten separately owned houses stand in close vicinity.
Previously Crispin Holborrow of Savills described the stately home as “right at the top of English homes, an architectural jewel” whilst in contrast Matthew Beckett of the popular blog The Country Seat criticized its architectural styling as featuring an “ill-proportioned copper dome, a tea cosy on a champagne bottle”.
On a more positive note, the eventual buyer of this stately home will get a bonus in the form of a set of vines planted in the former walled garden in 2008. They are described in the 64-page sales brochure for Tyringham Hall as “50% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir [whilst] the remaining 5% are Pinot Meunier. [They] will create a very good English sparkling wine”.
Savills now seek £12.5 million ($17.9 million or €15.9 million).

My view is that this place is simply just too big to be a family home and that it is lacking in the land that a buyer of a country house at this level would want. It is similar in that context to the properties of James Perkins of GL50 Developments – Howsham Hall in Yorkshire being one example, which also struggled to sell – creates. Only the nouveau rich would go for such places whilst the sensible go for more traditional estates in places like Herefordshire (e.g. Liz Hurley bought Donnington Hall with 187 acres for around £6 million in 2012).
The painting of the hand is horrific but everything else about the place is delightful.
I agree with Ethel !! That painting would be the first thing I would replace !! The house is very livable and looks in good condition …Who was the original owner of the estate ??/
A place that size without land is as useless as a Rolls Royce without an engine. All show and no go.
but it is a shame.
I visited the clinic many times and it was a welcomed holidays in a most pleasant English environment. The clinic was always occupied to full capacity, with people travelling from all over the world to spend time there. and yes, there would be the celebrities too!
we were told that asbestos had been discovered, and some building work would be done before re-start trading as a clinic.
it never happened. Instead it was sold to private owners. such a shame!
I was born in this house in August 1945 after my mother was evacuated from Dagenham I visited it just before it closed as a health retreat and was able to purchase an umbrella with the Tyringham name embossed on it we were allowed to wander in the gardens but were unable to go any due ther than the entrance hall inside. The outdoor swimming pool at that time was empty. I also have seen that the house was shown in the film Arabesque with Sophia Loren and Gregory Peck . I would loved to have been able to visit again before it was sold privately. It is a very beautiful house in glorious grounds
