Professor Alan Sked forms new party
In 1991, Alan Sked, a professor of International History at the London School of Economics, formed the Anti-Federalist League. In 1993, the organisation became what is now known as the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) but after leaving what he came to see as a factionalised organisation in 1997, Sked has just formed a new party named New Deal.
Sked’s new centre-left party has a somewhat curious mix of policies. He inevitably advocates a withdrawl from the EU but also wishes to renationalise the railways and save the Royal Mail. He also states that he views UKIP to be “xenophobic” and believes himself to be more pro “intellectual” than the party he left.
Roosevelt promised a New Deal in America in the 1930s. Somehow we doubt Sked will even come close to putting his vision into action. The New Deal Party doesn’t even have a website yet.
