In condemning wearing a poppy, the historian Dr. David Starkey has yet again shown himself to be nothing but a pompous ass
Son of a cleaner and a washing machine factory foreman from Kendal (not that there is anything wrong with that in itself), Dr. David Starkey CBE is, without any good reason at all, undoubtedly one of the most inappropriately pompous prats in Britain.
A bit of a know-all by all accounts and most definitely a xenophobe, Starkey described the former Attorney General Dominic Grieve as a “lying and deceiving shit” in September and in August 2011 strangely referred to “chavs” as having “become black” and “whites” having “become black.”
This morning, speaking to The Telegraph’s Christopher Chope on the ‘Chopper’s Election Podcast’ show, swivel-eyed Starkey showed yet another truly awful side to his character by suggesting wearing a poppy to remember the service of our military to be a “crazy religious ritual.” He went further and aside from condemning “poppy fascism,” complained about “putting little teddy bears on war memorials” as “abstracted from reality.” Soldiers, Starkey, ranted “enjoy killing” and supporting them is “deranged” he declared.
Elsewhere in the interview, Starkey termed the “aggressive” Supreme Court “trash” and “above [its] station” and “very poor quality” backbench MPs as “stooges.” He irrelevantly blabbered on about Gilbert and Sullivan and lauded the idea of a directly elected Prime Minister. Liberal Democrats, he suggested, have an “odour” about them and the Labour front bench are “indescribable.” Brexit, he ended, will “define us as English.”
The only sensible remark from Starkey during the 27:38 minute exchange was to analyse the “empty vacuum of awfulness” that was Theresa May as “like ice cold water poured over enthusiasm.” Beyond that, we’d rather this bitter bore just shut up.

I have always found his accent irritating.
Gina, Surely it’s what he says IN his accent that’s more troublesome.
Btw, he can’t differentiate between England and Britain. Tw*t.
He lauds it around like he’s an aristocrat when he’s frankly nothing other than common.
In actual fact, the Starkey family-like him or not(and I don’t) are an ancient Cheshire family of great antiquity and distinction.
I think you mean ‘lords it’ not ‘lauds’ it and you should never call people common especially when you have a very common name like Anderson!
Don’t give this pompous idiot the oxygen of publicity, shut him down, nasty little man, never seen a shot fired in anger I bet!
For as long as I can remember, Starkey has made a living out of being controversial. Most of the time, he doesn’t say things because he really believes in them – but rather because he likes to cause a stir. Remember when he claimed that if England celebrated a national day, it would mean it had become a feeble little country like Scotland, Wales and Ireland? Or how he attributed the 2011 riots to white people copying blacks? In fact, when he was on the ‘Moral Maze’, he delighted in being called “the rudest man in Britain”.
Basically, he’s just Katie Hopkins with a doctorate. But he’s not even that good as a historian. Simon Schama is far superior.
By the way, Matthew, the host of that podcast is Christopher Hope and not the ghastly Tory, who derailed bills against FGM and upskirting, Christopher Chope.
What an obnoxious Twat, he should be ashamed of himself regarding the, remembering our fallen men and women.
Also, those tortoise shell bins he’s wearing, are far too small for his big head.
He has no reason to be pompous. I heard his dad also worked in a shoe shop for some time. Someone should shoe him away.
Contrarians get attention , he is always been so whilst not decrying his skills as a Tudor Historian he is no John Guy or Diarmaid Mac Culloch.
Rather he is an attention seeking lovey who goads those he deems intellectually inferior ,in other words everybody else, on various TV shows or podcasts. A semi hysteric at times who signally refuses to recognise alternative opinions, narcissistic probably yes
