The late daughter of schoolteachers from Sidcup, Kent and a mother of two, Gillian Clarke met her Conservative politician husband Kenneth at Cambridge in 1963. A redoubtable “rock” to her husband and “gracious hostess”, Clarke could not drive but was a “highly acclaimed scholar in medieval history”. She was well-known for her work helping prisoners and ex-prisoners.
