In January 2015, Irish born John Patrick Hannan became the world’s most elusive fugitive after having spent 60 years on the run. Jailed for car theft and assaulting two police officers for 21 months in 1955, Hannan escaped from HM Prison The Verne on the Isle of Portland thirty days into his sentence aged 22. He has never been seen since and interestingly there is not a single picture of him available online. In 2001, Dorset Police remarked: “We are no longer actively searching for John Patrick Hannan, but we’d still love to find him, even after all these years – there’s a small matter of some unfinished business”.

It actually wouldn’t matter if there were any images of him to put online, convicted at 22 he would now be totally unrecognisable at 82. Let’s hope he spent his life in honest endeavour, chances are that he did as he was never caught again because petty criminals normally re-offend, perhaps he realised that he had a second chance and was sensible enough to change his ways. Would make a good film.
He probably became a policeman. Best place to hide.
How many of us would like to escape from the intrusiveness of our modern state.
My accountant tells me he has met a client who has managed to eradicate any trace of himself from the ‘system’.
God knows how he managed it.
