Deemed a “global Godmother of Cool” by Town & Country, actress, director, producer and screenwriter Sofia Coppola triumphed with Lost in Translation and became the third woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. This twice married daughter of Francis Ford Coppola has been described as “soft-spoken” but “firm” and of her upbringing herself told The Guardian in 2003: “I guess that most kids from known families, there’s a cliché that they don’t work as hard. But I’m definitely a hard worker, and I don’t think about proving myself. When you’re working with people, they can tell whether or not you know what you’re talking about”. She describes herself as “a sucker for a love story”.
