Heroine of the Hour 2021 – Rachael Blackmore

In becoming the first woman ever to win the Grand National, Rachael Blackmore has brought much needed joy to the racing world

Yesterday’s 11/1 win for one of The Steeple Times’ selections, Rachael Blackmore on Minella Times in the Grand National, marks a truly significant moment for the most famous horse race in the world.

Securing a clear victory in the 173rd running of the race, Blackmore became the first female jockey ever to win the £750,000 race and in doing so this 31-year-old from Tipperary has now been catapulted into the premier league of the sport’s history.

Speaking afterwards, modest to her core Blackmore remarked:

“I don’t feel male or female – I don’t even feel human!”

“This is the Aintree Grand National. I’m completely blown away. Minella Times was unbelievable, he jumped fantastic, I don’t think he missed a beat anywhere.”

“This is a massive deal for me personally, not the fact I’m a female. The thing that hit me when I crossed the line was that I’d won the National, not that I’m the first female to win the National. I’m just delighted.”

Now, in the wake of having also secured a historic six wins at the Cheltenham Festival, here is a lady who has truly broken glass ceilings. Next, with fellow jockey Paul Townend injured and only 10 wins ahead of her, it is quite feasible that Rachael Blackmore will win the Irish Jockey’s championship.

Heroine of the Hour 2021 – Rachael Blackmore’s win on Minella Times at 11/1 was taken “in convincing fashion” in the view of the ‘Mail on Sunday’s’ Marcus Townend. It follows on from her having become the first female to ride six winners at the Cheltenham Festival last month.
