Wally of the Week: House of Commons Speaker John Bercow

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow is plainly obsessed with Roger Federer and given how much time he has on his hands, he may as well resign

Yesterday, on Boxing Day, the BBC’s Radio 4 Today Programme extraordinarily invited John Bercow, the diminutive Speaker of the House of Commons to be its guest editor. Naturally, this toxic little man couldn’t help himself and annoyed listeners when he pompously announced that he’d watched Roger Federer on 65 of the 85 occasions he’d played during the year.

During an interview with the nine-time Wimbledon champion, toady Bercow responded to Federer’s comments that he found tennis tours “a lot of fun” by stating:

“Maybe that concept demonstrates one of the differences between you and other great players, you don’t see it as a burden to be borne”.

“I’ve watched 65 of your matches this year and I always have the impression that you absolutely love it”.

Amongst the many listeners to take to Twitter afterwards, one commented: “If John Bercow had time on his hands to attend 65 Federer matches in 2014 why do we need a commons speaker?” whilst another added: “In 2015 I resolve to stop ripping the p*** out of Mr Speaker, the vertically challenged John Bercow; he does it so much better himself”.

They are right: This year, Bercow hit the headlines not for his work in Parliament but instead for racking up a claim of £1,200 to attend a funeral in Manchester. In 2013, similarly, he sought £10,000 for expenses that included the polishing of a coffee table and his travel bill from 2010 to 2014 has been estimated to be somewhere in the order of £96,000. John Bercow, it seems, is a man with too much time on his hands and on that basis, he may as well give up.

Frankly, with a New Year approaching, it is time for this Wally of the Week to get off the gravy train. John Bercow and his odious wife, Sally, should be shoed out of office and head for Siberia: Game, set and match.
