A kebabed troll: Lady Meyer and TripAdvisor don’t mix

TripAdvisor and the wives of former ambassadors do not mix

Champagne loving Lady Meyer is a woman who should have known better. An associate of Gerry and Kate McCann – whose own comments about having been ‘trolled’ on Twitter were followed by the death of a housewife named Brenda Leyland – and a friend of the ‘keen to change the law on trolling’ Home Secretary Theresa May, Meyer took to TripAdvisor after dining at the new Sloane Square restaurant Canvas by Michael Riemenschneider and left an especially bitter review. What she didn’t bank on was that her rant would end up first reported in the Daily Mail and then The Telegraph.

Canvas by Michael Riemenschneider features a lively cocktail bar that Lady Meyer described as “noisy”

Meyer – once described as “Chanel-clad” by The Telegraph and who tweets as @ladylilo2 – ordered expensive wines and then moaned that she was charged “as much by the glass as a bottle would cost in a wine merchant”. She didn’t stop there and whined that the bar was too noisy, the restaurant’s tasting menu (which is its entire ethos) “pretentious” and that her £144 bill was “even for SW1… steep”. She titled her review “expensive and very disappointing”. It is important to remember that nobody forced her to go there and nobody made her make the food choices she did.

According to Riemenschneider and not reported by either newspaper, Meyer got the prices of the items she quoted in her TripAdvisor review wrong and she and her ‘red-socked-fop’ husband failed to complain at the time. This woman’s actions are, indeed, typical of the trolls who use TripAdvisor to wreck the reputations of restaurants but what this “sociable former ambassador’s wife” didn’t bank upon in her first foray into TripAdvisor reviewing was that by using a photograph, she’d get caught and exposed.

Meyer – who also once whinged to The Telegraph that her work in the ‘charitable sector’ meant that she was “doing a huge amount of work for very little salary” – should learn her lesson: Play with TripAdvisor at your peril. Lady Meyer would, in fact, do well to stick to kebab shops on the Kings Road.

    1. Basia Briggs … is a very great friend of Lady Meyer. In fact, so good a friend she hosted a birthday party for her… [EDITED]

      • Peter: On this score you are wrong. I don’t believe Basia Briggs entertains Lady Meyer any more but equally may I point out that the party you mention though organised and held kindly by Basia, sadly was actually for jointly for myself and Lady Meyer. Her birthday is the 26th January, mine is the 27th. Most of the guests at that event, all those years ago, were actually my friends but the press only mentioned the Meyer woman. Basia, I can now make clear, was as hoodwinked by Lady Meyer as I was. It is public knowledge that I fell out with the “Chanel-clad” one due to her curious methods of running what she calls a charity and today’s stories do not surprise me either.

        • I am not surprised Lady Meyer has fallen out with you and Mrs Briggs. Support Find Madeleine and you will both be forgiven. Don’t and you will go to hell. Lady Meyer is a good woman.

      • Lady Meyer is a wonderful lady and she supports dear Gerry and Kate McCann in their campaign to find dearly beloved Madeleine. I am shocked that she spends so much in a restaurant – £144 would buy me two weeks of shopping – but Lady Meyer and Theresa May should not be attacked. The owner of this restaurant should be ashamed of himself. In fact…. He can put things right in one way: He should give a month’s profits to the Find Madeleine Fund. He will then redeem himself.

    2. Lady Meyer is probably more comfortable with the Kebab shops on the Kings Road. There is a no shit policy and you pay up front and she is not obliged to leave tips for service staff, this way is convenient as she gets paid fuck all for her charitable work

    3. Lady Meyer shown to be a TripAdvisor ranter. Am I surprised? NO. She’s been known to have outbursts before. I’ll never forget that shouting match at Papillon restaurant during some fashion show between her and a gentleman named Charles. I’ll not share his surname for fear of embarrassing him by association with that old b**t.

    4. Why doesn’t this silly Lady Meyer woman not join up with our old mucker Thomas McLoughlin? He’s fat and badly dressed. She’s “Chanel-clad” and only eats lettuce. Lady Mucker could give him something clothing advice and Tommy Troubled With The Truth could feed her up.

    5. Watch it Steeples. You’ve already had a biffing from footpads in the past. If you continue your relentless campaign against ‘red-socked-fops’, we might gang-up on you and muddy your red suede shoes. Be warned!

      • The “Chanel-clad” one and her TV sofa-loving husband are very good at getting themselves attention that most sensible sorts would deem unwanted. There is no campaign against them personally but I am not alone in my dislike of their approach to life. In fact, equally, as Lady Meyer chose to write what she did on TripAdvisor, she must take the consequences of writing such damaging remarks and on that basis I urge you to read our article about the need for TripAdvisor itself to reform its ways also: http://thesteepletimes.com/tipple-fare/tripping-out/

What I do support and champion, however, is a campaign for the better regulation of charity – including the scrapping of the toothless Charity Commission. Charitable pay should be better regulated and the way in which charities allocate the vast resources they receive should be transparent to the public. I would urge Lady Meyer to support this herself but somehow I think that highly unlikely. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas.

    6. “Mandrake disclosed last year that all but £9,500 of the money received in donations by Pact, which stands for Parents & Abducted Children Together, was paid to Lady Meyer, who is the chief executive, and to one member of staff. The latest figures from the charity showed that Lady Meyer, who is also its president, and her employee were paid a total of £49,586. Lady Meyer received almost 70 per cent of that sum. Pact’s income from donations was £59,056 and it received a further £38,234 in grants.”
